NCAA Championships 2007 20k Classic
2007 NCAA Championships
I don’t know about everyone else, but the nasty weather the last few days has made me really excited to begin the race season. Although, I can’t wait for the snow to fall and get on some real skis, it may actually be more beneficial to stay off the snow and continue with quality dry-land training. This is my first blog post so I will update everyone about me, my ski racing goals, and my training.
A little about myself: My name is Phill Violett for the lucky people who don’t know me. I grew up in Brownsville, CA a small town nestled in the foothills of the sierra nevadas. From 2000-2004, I attended Sugar Bowl Academy paving the way as the only cross-country skier for the most part. While at Sugar Bowl Academy I had the honor of being coached by Glenn Jobe, Jeff Schloss, Ben Grasseschi, and Lorenzo Worster. Throughout my high school experience my coaching was provided through Auburn Ski Club and Far West. Post-SBA I received a ski scholarship to Northern Michigan University coach by Sten Fjeldheim and Jenny Ryan. At NMU as a wildcat I learned what it takes to become a great ski racer, and it’s simple train everyday for 1-3 hours, 52 weeks a year, for 15 years. At NMU, I participated in 3 NCAA Championships (Best result 12th in 2007), Won a hand full of college races big and small and surfed Lake Superior every month by February because there was too much ice. I graduated with honors last May with a BFA in Design. Currently, I am working at a small engineering firm in Auburn, Ca and once again training full time in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada’s and loving every second of it.
SKIING @ ASC WITH MATIN IN JUNE 2008 AWESOME DAY
As an athlete it is very important to have goals, both short term and long term.
2009-2010 season Goals: my focus is growth, evolving from a collegiate racer to a professional racer. This growth involves developing new race schedule, new goals, and a new living environment. This year my technical goal is to develop my skate skiing to match classic results. With that said I am focusing my training to peak for the American Birki (Goal top 10 finish) and The California Gold Rush (Top 3 finish). Overall, my primary focus for the upcoming season is to maintain or lower my USSA points.
2010-2011 Season Goal: Rank in the top 10 for the overall SuperTour
2011-2012 Season Goal: Start in World cup
2012-2013 Season Goal: Win races (US nationals, SuperTours, Marathons, World Cups, local races) I don’t care just as long as I get a few wins
2013-2014 Season Goal: OlympicsJ
2017-2018: OlympicsJ
Currently, my training is based off a training plan from Sten and Jenny that I tweak to fit my work and the far west training schedule. This time of year 75% of my training is distance (Easy level 1 to low Level 2), 15% Intensity (intervals, plyo’s, races, time trials (mid level 3 to high level 4)), and 10% strength (general and specific). My training ranges from 10 to 15 hours a week.
If you are reading this thanks for your interest and I hope to see you on the trails or at a race in the near future. FYI, the Far West fundraiser is November 7 at Sugar bowl, to support the Far West Senior team purchase bike raffle tickets @ www.farwestnordic.org
Until next time- Phill
